Accelerated Reader is a requirement for those who are in reading classes. Students in rewards OR have exited the reading program are not required to take tests, but they are welcome to. They just need to see me so I can add them to a class.
At the beginning of the year and at semester, we give every student the STARR test that tells us their reading level for Accelerated Reader. Then using their individual reading levels, they are assigned an amount of points to get for the entire quarter. This number is based on their reading levels and reading 20 minutes a day (on average).
